Nine Lives – In Search of the Sacred in Modern India

“Before you drink from a skull, your must first find the right corpse,” Manisha Ma Bhairavi says even as her dreadlocked partner, Tapan Sadhu sitting at the back of the hut with a radio clamped to his ear shouts excitedly, “England are 270 for four!” This is the India British author William Dalrymple writes about in his latest book, Nine Lives. This is the India where mysticism cohabits with modernity, where even the fallen are worshipped, the outcasts form communities and where even a sadhu can be a MBA!

In his ‘first book after a decade’ author-historian-journalist Dalrymple unravels the many paradoxes that make up the very fluid fabric of Indian society. With the help of nine lives, he taps into the soul of the nation.

Nine Lives is a collection of linked non-fiction short stories, with each life representing a different form of devotion, or a different religious path. A Buddhist monk takes up arms to resist the Chinese invasion of Tibet – then spends years trying to atone for the violence by hand-printing prayer flags in India. A Jain nun tests her powers of detachment as she watches her best friend starve to death. A middle-class woman leaves her family to live as a tantric in a remote cremation ground. A prison warden in Kerala becomes, for two months a year, a temple dancer and is worshipped as an incarnate deity. An idol-maker from Tamil Nadu, the twenty-third in a long hereditary chain stretching back to the great bronze casters of the Chola Empire, worries if the next generation will take on this art “in the age of computers”. A triple refugee from Bihar finds her place as the Red Fairy in a Sufi shrine in Pakistan even as the threat from Islamic fundamentalism looms over. A devdasi initially resists her initiation into sex work, yet pushes her daughter into a trade she now regards as a sacred calling.

Dalrymple’s journey takes him from Sravanabelagola in Karnataka to the deserts of Rajasthan to the temples of Tanjore and Kerala and madrassas of Sindh before culminating in the lakeside country villages of West Bengal. He documents the oral histories of not just these nine lives but even of the cults and religions to which they belong, some going back to the time of the Rig Veda.

Each life acts “as a keyhole into the way that specific religious vocation has been caught and transformed in the vortex of India’s metamorphosis during this rapid period of transition, while revealing the extraordinary persistence of faith and ritual in a fast-changing landscape.” Yet, in spite of all the development India boasts of, Dalrymple finds his holy men and women discussing and agonising “about the same eternal quandaries that absorbed the holy men of classical India thousands of years ago” – the quest for material wealth against the claims of the spirit, personal devotion against conventional religion, textual orthodoxy against the emotional appeal of mysticism and the age-old war of duty and desire.

That Dalrymple is an accomplished writer is a fact. But it’s remarkable journalism that makes this book a must-read. He steps aside and let’s the people be the focus of the story. He brings himself him as only the thread that holds the stories together. The author has done well to add a glossary and a very note on the origin of the font type (Linotype Stempel Garamond) used in the book.

Nine Lives isn’t just another travel book. It’s a window to contemporary India – the one that remains forgotten or hidden, but is very much out there on the road, quite literally. As Dalrymple puts it, “The water moves on, a little faster than before, yet still the great river flows. It is as fluid and unpredictable in its moods as it has ever been, but it meanders within familiar banks.”

How to Become a Travel Nurse

Agencies were set up to provide nurses for areas that had seasonal populations and would need to boost their nursing staff according to those times. Such states as Arizona, California, Texas, and Florida became major factors in the growth of travel nurses. This was due partly to the large migrant population that moved from state to state, depending on the season, to find work or from people that would come south during the winter months. Now the demand for travel nurses is higher, because of the staffing problems that exist across the United States. It is most likely to become even higher in demand as the baby boomers grow older. They will be leaving the medical field, and will be placing more demand on the medical field. To take advantage of this growth, you will need to make sure that you are ready. If you have foreign language skills, you may even be able to travel abroad.

Training
You need to have achieved a RN (Registered Nurse) degree, at the very least. This can be achieved a number of ways. You can go through a traditional four-year BSN, a hospital based diploma (typically taking three-years), or a two year ADN program. Even after schooling, you will need one year of work experience, at a minimum. Make sure that this experience is in your specialty, or you may not be eligible for travel assignments inside your specialty.

Finding the Travel Job
The first step is to find a travel nursing company. There are hundreds of these available. They may handle local, national, or even global assignments. The traveling nursing agency is essentially a job recruiter. They help you with handling the details of your assignment, including relocation or registering with any local authorities. They offer guidance in location and focus. Most assignments last 13 weeks, but you can usually renew your contract if you wish to stay longer. Some of the leading travel nursing companies in the United States are the Cross Country TravCorps, American Mobile Healthcare, Preferred Healthcare Staffing, Medical Express, O’Grady Peyton International, and Nurses Rx.

What are the benefits
Lodgings are typically provided for the traveling nurse. These are located near the facility and are normally fully furnished. Salaries are very competitive, in some cases up $40 per hour. There are often bonus programs, not to mention comprehensive medical and dental insurance. Traveling nurses can spend as little as 4 weeks to 52 weeks on an assignment. You can move with the seasons, move where the best pay is, or try out a city that you think you may be interested in living in. There are often sign on bonuses with the companies, referral bonuses, travel reimbursement plans and so much more. Over seas jobs are available as well. Imagine being able to spend your summers in Europe before returning to Florida or California to get through the Winter Season. From large cities to the smaller towns, traveling nurses are in demand and you can join in.

How The Brain Learns

Do you remember when you moved the furniture in your room? Do you remember how you kinda bumped into everything a couple of times and then figured it out. The funny thing is that it took you two to three turns of bumping into things in the dark, before you worked out things had changed.

And the brain learned. Through repetition.

But remember when you put your finger into a candle flame and got burned? You never ever did that again, did you? The brain learned a lesson very, very quickly. You didn’t need a second turn to figure out the danger.

In effect, the brain learns through:
1) Repetition
2) Extreme danger

Since your business isn’t in extreme danger all day, through out the year, the chances are your brain isn’t learning as much as it possibly could. Which is why it’s important to use the concept of repetition. Take one concept that you learn in business and repeat it time and time again. For example: Referrals. Ask for referrals every single day, in every single way. And mark a tick if you succeed. Mark a cross if you fail. In under ten days, referrals will become part of your system. And you’ll never forget it.

Repeat. It’s the only way to learn.

Why Do Not Believe In Disabilities

It seemed like only yesterday that I was living in Washington, D.C., working in corporate America, waking up at 6 am, rushing with my coffee while I brushed my teeth and put on my pinstripe suit and yellow power tie, and drove to work, arriving before rush hour. Only to be stressed out the rest of the day and night. After a major heart attack, a burst appendicitis, a dysfunctional vagus nerve (requiring an implant) and a myriad of other health problems, I was put on the corporate sidelines, and, doctors said I would not be working again. I was only forty years old.

To be technical, I was now considered disabled. I did not buy the term. I bought a cheap computer and learned all I could about the Internet. I learned how to be a cartoonist and writer. I learned how to outsource and license the manufacturing of my image products. I became an entrepreneur within a few years, yet the government still considered me disabled.

So now I was out to prove something. Though my body could not work like my mind, my mind did indeed still function, so, to me, I was hardly disabled. But I had to prove it to myself. So after creating Londons Times Cartoons, the most visited cartoon site on the Internet, I felt, “this is a good start”. 9 e-stores later, I knew I was onto something, but, of course “disabled”.

Somehow, I felt I still had something to prove to myself so I learned a new skill online, Internet business and technology at a very good accredited college, finished nearly four years, and am on break. I was on scholarship by the way. And I am disabled. Go figure.

I told my local social security office of my new business and education activities and even applied for their PASS program. They simply ignored my suggestion that maybe a disability is not a disability at all. If one really wants to do something, just do it, disabled or not.

I have discussed my ability to accomplish with many other so-called disabled persons, and have discovered many similar stories. I am certainly not a hero nor even unique. Many have made accomplishments that I only hope to come close to doing.

Which brings me to the whole issue of labeling. What is so productive about labeling? I have been ten times more productive as a “disabled person” than when I was “fully functional” (pushing and signing papers mostly), in corporate America. It is truly something to think about.

Hypnosis is a method that has been used for many years, and continues to become more popular of a treatment than ever before. Because of this, new techniques and styles are developed constantly and conversational hypnosis is just one example of hypnosis technique. If you’re interested in learning conversational hypnosis, there are some basic points that should be learned before beginning your journey to learning this method.Begin With the Basics

Because conversational hypnosis is only one aspect of the hypnosis method, it is important to start from the beginning and to learn the basics of hypnosis in general before becoming too accustomed to a particular angle of the hypnosis process. This will help to prepare you for any unexpected issues that may come into play when practicing conversational hypnosis.

Learning Conversational Hypnosis

Obviously, taking the time and money to work with a professional is a great bet. But if you’re someone who do not have the time or money for professional instruction, you can still learn hypnosis.

There are some excellent books about the subject available on the market, some of the better ones include Conversational Hypnosis by Carol Sommer or Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors by D. Hammond which is the biggest compilation of hypnosis suggestions.

You may also be able to find online instruction through pay websites and even free ones, although you usually get what you pay for. Make sure to check your sources before putting full stock into them as this may very well point you in the wrong direction when it comes to learning hypnosis.

Being able to use more than 1 method of learning hypnosis would give you a great head start, so on top of taking professional instruction, go ahead and invest in a good educational book that is highly regarded for it’s purpose. If you’ve invested in some good conversational hypnosis books, find highly rated online instruction to supplement the books. Keep an open mind, work hard, and the rest will fall into place.

Have You Heard Of Remote Viewing And Influencing?

If you’re like me, you spend hours surfing the internet looking for weird stuff that you’ve never seen or read about before. During my extensive research one evening, as I scoured cyberspace to find some new and unusual crap to entertain myself with, I finally found what I was looking for.At about 2:00 A.M. on a Thursday night, I couldn’t relax, couldn’t sleep, so I traveled downstairs to the computer and went online to find some information about meditation or relaxation techniques to help me clear my head so I could fall asleep. On one of the websites I visited, there was a collection of links to various websites that teach meditation and relaxation techniques, such as yoga, Zen, and something called “open-eye meditation.” None of these things interested me, until I found a link to a website for something called “Remote Viewing & Remote Influencing.” This was intriguing, so I clicked through to the website.

At the very top of the first page was the title, “Welcome to the Remote Viewing and Remote Influencing Information Page – Your Real Life Time Machine.” I sat forward in my chair, excited as can be. “This is it,” I said to myself. “This is the kind of weird crap I’ve been looking for.”

The information contained there was fascinating. Remote viewing was allegedly developed by the CIA during the Cold War era, circa 1970, as a way to make use of our natural psychic potential to spy on the Russians without having to travel to the Soviet Union to do it. Using remote viewing, by focusing one’s mental powers on a certain point in space and time, it is possible to view what is going on anywhere at anytime; past, present, or future.

On the website, it also claimed that there were operatives who were trained in remote viewing and became so clairvoyant that they had to be locked underground in cages at different locales around the world. One was locked in a cage in Brazil, another in an intelligence base near Washington, and the third in an underground facility in Paramus, NJ. Yes, that’s right, Paramus, NJ!

After I finished reading about remote viewing, I arrived at the remote influencing part of the website, which was even more bizarre, but cool. According to the information posted there, “remote influencing allows you to create your own fate and future, attracting the people and situations you want, and not be subject anymore to or addicted to the system of group consciousness.” Apparently, remote influencing is some sort of mind control technique which enables you to create any reality you desire, alter your appearance, and change the world as you see fit; to play god, sort of speak.

The website never explained as to how one can actually learn to do this, though it did say that for $89.95 I could order their training tapes, which are backed by a 30-day money back guarantee. Right above the order form on the website was written “Order now for only $89.95, and learn how to change the world and play God – or your money back!”

I thought to myself, “For only $89.95 I get to become the Lord! What a great deal!” But, by that time it was 3 A.M., and since I was too tired to go back upstairs and get my credit card, I went back to bed. The next day, I did some further research, and I found a message board where people were discussing remote viewing and remote influencing products they had ordered online, and they revealed that what was sent to them was nothing more than some relaxation tapes narrated by a man with an eerie voice, accompanied by some ethereal background music.

So, are remote viewing and remote influencing proponents a bunch of quacks? Not necessarily. The principles they teach are probably true for the most part. They’re basically saying that we have the power within our own minds to control our destiny and to harness the power of the subconscious mind to do things that would seem supernatural to our conscious mind. Personally, I do believe in the power of the mind and that we can break free from the shackles of consciousness to achieve a higher state of mental well-being.

This is one of the basic tenets of Scientology, that people have the power within themselves to do amazing things. So, despite having stumbled upon something that at first glance seemed like a scam or a bunch of empty nonsense, there was at least some wisdom imparted to me after having read through the information presented. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go to my remote viewing class that starts in a half hour; we’re going to use remote viewing to try to find Bin Laden.
